I sent the following letter to the editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer:
William Greider could not be more wrong in arguing that progressives have to pick a fight with their own party as a result of the debt ceiling deal. Instead, progressives need to pick a fight with the Republican party that is leading the assault on the American people with the austerity agenda. It is the Republican controlled House of Representatives that will not permit fair taxation of the rich. It is the Republican controlled House of Representatives that is focused on cutting support for the most vulnerable in our society.
We have a SEPARATION of powers in the national government, not a concentration of power in the Presidency. The President can’t pass legislation without substantial support in the House of Representatives and Senate. The President can only negotiate with the people in the room. That was Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner. Relying on any President to advance an agenda without support from the House of Representatives and Senate is foolish.
What progressives need to do is get elected to Congress and work to end the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Progressives need to recruit candidates now to challenge Republicans. This agenda to protect the rich at all costs is being advanced because of the Republican wins last November. Instead of expecting someone else to do the work, get to work.
